- My name is Linda Belkner and I am the Administrative Manager of Nursing at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. I have been a registered nurse for 33 years and I am a student in the Masters of Management program at Cambridge College. I live in Concord, MA with my husband, daughter, and our Yorkshire terrier. I am very interested in the nursing shortage and the aging nursing workforce and how the nursing profession will adapt and change in the next decade and beyond.

Hi Linda,
It was such fun to read your articles and comments from your colleages. It is obvious that many of you have strong bonds and support of one another. I enjoyed the Nursing recruitment video from a male perspective. This was a terrific video encouraging more men to enter the nursing field. Due to advanced technology, varied opportunities, and financial stability, more men may be attracted to this field as well. Men and women are entering nursing later in life, reentering the field or adding nursing as a second career. My concern is that some institutions may not perceive hiring the older nurse as desirable, since younger nurses tend to work for less salary and appear more energetic. I would like to see a video tributing the older nurse and highlight the benefits and contributions that a more seasoned nurse can offer the work place. In addition, salary in the suburbs may not be as attractive as in Boston proper and flexible schedules may not be as readily available. Any ideas on how this can be remedied? This topic is truly a work in progress. Great insight in to a changing and challenging profession.

Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future is a public awareness campaign that tries to alleviate the nursing shortage problems in America through multifocal endeavors in retaining and recruiting nurses from diverse backgrounds.
Johnson & Johnson really exerted a great effort in balancing the ration between male and female nurses, as they believed that male nurses would significantly mitigated this problem. In the campaign, Johnson & Johnson noticed to put both men and women on the cover of their monthly – issued newsletters in turns. They understood to apply both men and women in their TV commercials. Since its initiation in 2002, Johnson & Johnson unwavering efforts in improving nurses’ image and welfare systems have made great headways in this issue.
According to Vanderbilt University School of Nursing recently, the number of male nurses had been doubled compared to twenty years ago. A recent Gallup Poll throughout the whole country, turned out to rank the nursing profession as the most credible profession, even won over doctors, teachers and military officers.
Andrea Higham, director of The Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing's Future，said: “men are a key target of their campaign, for the nursing shortage would cease to exist, if the number of men entering nursing each year grew to anywhere near the number of women entering the field.”
Actually,generally speaking, men indeed alleviated this plight to some extent according to the statistics. Particularly, under the trend of the large-scale conscription and return of the young male soldiers, more young people would like to serve for the cause of saving lives. Another reason I think is that compared to other professions, nursing needs the least basic knowledges, which can easily developed in the further study and practice in this career.
