A Case for Nurse Residency Programs.

As we move into the next decade, it will be imperative to mentor and support the novice nurse. This article in Hospitals & Health Networks builds a case for nursing residency programs. The article states, "Nurse residency programs are part classroom teaching and part support group, and last longer than the usual hospital orientation. And while they can be costly—at least one hospital spends nearly $22,000 per nurse—nurse executives say the results more than justify the expense: reduced turnover, more proficient nurses, enhanced critical thinking. " The article can be accessed at:

I agree that the mentoring role of the veteran nurse has taken on a new meaning and encompasses a far greater responsibility. In the fast paced and overworked clinical arena, it is important that nurses take the time and interest in the new graduates educational journey. I am enjoying your blog and will continue to read your new entries.

The time spent helping a novice nurse into an entry level positon is worth every dollar. Look at the time and expense compared to MD residency programs. Need I say more??

Very interesting information. Thank you. It is cool that nurse residency programs exist. On website some benefits of medical practice for nurses is given. But it is difficult sometimes to get an internship like this. Because it’s necessary to prepare a lot of different documents for the nurse residency program. For example motivation letters, your biography, personal statements, admission essays and other papers. However, the practical part of the education is very important for every student, especially if it's a doctor or a nurse.
